If you remember, I wrote previously about a trick I learned from my counselor to help with sleepless nights. She said to go through the alphabet, naming attributes and/or names of God. This trick really does work for me, and rarely do I make it even halfway through before I am fast asleep. Listed below are examples for you to use to hopefully bring some much‑needed peace and rest to your most restless nights.
Almighty: “When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to him and said, ‘I am El-Shaddai—God Almighty. Serve me faithfully and live a blameless life.’” Gen. 17:1
Beauty: “From Mount Zion, the perfection of beauty, God shines in glorious radiance.” Ps. 50:2
Counselor: “For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” Isa. 9:6
Delights: “He led me to a place of safety; he rescued me because he delights in me.” Ps. 18:19
Eternal: “God also said to Moses, ‘Say this to the people of Israel: Yahweh, the God of your ancestors—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob—has sent me to you. This is my eternal name, my name to remember for all generations.’” Ex. 3:15
Forgiving: “The Lord is slow to anger and filled with unfailing love, forgiving every kind of sin and rebellion. But he does not excuse the guilty. He lays the sins of the parents upon their children; the entire family is affected—even children in the third and fourth generations.” Num. 14:18
Generous: “However, he has given each one of us a special gift through the generosity of Christ.” Eph. 4:7
Holy: “For I, the Lord, am the one who brought you up from the land of Egypt, that I might be your God. Therefore, you must be holy because I am holy.” Lev. 11:45
Immanuel: “Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel, which means ‘God is with us.’” Matt. 1:23
Joyful: “And Nehemiah continued, ‘Go and celebrate with a feast of rich foods and sweet drinks, and share gifts of food with people who have nothing prepared. This is a sacred day before our Lord. Don’t be dejected and sad, for the joy of the Lord is your strength!’” Neh. 8:10
Kind: “Love your enemies! Do good to them. Lend to them without expecting to be repaid. Then your reward from heaven will be very great, and you will truly be acting as children of the Most High, for he is kind to those who are unthankful and wicked.” Luke 6:35
Love: “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good! His faithful love endures forever.” Ps. 118:1
Merciful: “But the Lord our God is merciful and forgiving, even though we have rebelled against him.” Dan. 9:9
Near: “For what great nation has a god as near to them as the Lord our God is near to us whenever we call on him?” Deut. 4:7
Omniscient: This word means all-knowing. “Nothing in all creation is hidden from God. Everything is naked and exposed before his eyes, and he is the one to whom we are accountable.” Heb. 4:13
Prince of Peace: “For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” Isa. 9:6
Quick to Listen: “I love the Lord because he hears my voice and my prayer for mercy. Because he bends down to listen, I will pray as long as I have breath!” Ps. 116:1–2
Redeemer: “This is what the Lord says—your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: ‘I am the Lord your God, who teaches you what is good for you and leads you along the paths you should follow.’” Isa. 48:17
Shepherd: “The Lord is my shepherd; I have all that I need.” Ps. 23:1
True: “But the Lord is the only true God. He is the living God and the everlasting King! The whole earth trembles at his anger. The nations cannot stand up to his wrath.” Jer. 10:10
Understanding: “Evil people don’t understand justice, but those who follow the Lord understand completely.” Prov. 28:5
Victorious: “But thank God! He gives us victory over sin and death through our Lord Jesus Christ.” 1 Cor. 15:57
Wonderful: “For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” Isa. 9:6
Xristos: I needed extra help with this letter. There are not many options, but I found a fellow blogger who suggested Xristos. It is the Greek name for God. “Andrew went to find his brother, Simon, and told him, ‘We have found the Messiah’ (which means ‘Christ’).” John 1:41
Yahweh: “And God said to Moses, ‘I am Yahweh—the Lord.’” Ex. 6:2
Zealous: “His government and its peace will never end. He will rule with fairness and justice from the throne of his ancestor David for all eternity. The passionate commitment of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies will make this happen!” Isa. 9:7
